What is an NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health. It can tell you whether you’re at higher risk of getting certain health problems. The check is for people who are aged 40 to 74 who do not have certain pre-existing conditions. For more information please visit the NHS website here.
Our Role in NHS Health Checks
At Leeds GP Confederation (the Confed), we hold the contract for the NHS Health Checks on behalf of Public Health, Leeds City Council. We also play a vital role in supporting and enhancing NHS Health Checks within our community.
By working closely with GP practices, Primary Care Networks (PCNs), and community organisations, we help ensure that NHS Health Checks are accessible, effective, and widely available. Our aim is to improve early detection of cardiovascular diseases and related conditions, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for our local population.
Who We Work With
GP Practices & Primary Care Networks (PCNs)
We provide tailored support to GP practices, ensuring they can deliver NHS Health Checks efficiently and safely. Our assistance includes:
Best Practice Guidance
We provide GP practices with up-to-date protocols and recommendations to enhance service quality.
Patient Engagement Strategies
We offer innovative approaches to increase patient participation, particularly among those most likely to benefit from an NHS Health Checks such as those with a high BMI, smokers, those from ethnically diverse communities and those living in deprived areas. All these groups are more likely to have a cardiovascular disease.
Data Insights & Analysis
By supplying data-driven insights, we help practices identify trends, target outreach efforts, and optimise service delivery.
Training & Professional Development
We facilitate training sessions and workshops to ensure GP practice and PCN staff remain skilled and confident in delivering NHS Health Checks.
Community Organisations
We actively collaborate with local community groups through small projects to extend the reach of NHS Health Checks beyond traditional clinical settings. Our goal is to make these NHS Health Checks more accessible to those most likely to benefit from an NHS Health Check. This includes:
Delivering NHS Health Checks in Community Settings
Working with trusted organisations to host NHS Health Checks in familiar and accessible locations such as community centres, places of worship, and local events.
Culturally Sensitive Outreach
Partnering with groups that understand and can address cultural or language barriers, ensuring equitable access to NHS Health Checks.
Tailored Public Awareness Campaigns
Developing and promoting health education initiatives that resonate with specific demographics, encouraging participation of the NHS Health Check.
An example of this is during Race Equality Week 2025, we delivered an NHS Health Check Community Testing Programme, engaging with the refugee community in Leeds and offering NHS Health Checks in a way that felt comfortable to attendees. To read more about this, please click here.
